Summary/Abstract: The development of cooperation contributes to a number of problems related to the coordination and management of complicated systems. They require undertaking of many adaptive and adjustive activities to the requirements and requests of the partners. Some of these activities take on the character of innovation. The interesting issue is therefore an attempt to identify product, process, marketing and organizational improvements that result from the cooperation process. The paper identifies and evaluates the innovative activities undertaken by the SME sector as a result of cooperation. The theoretical part was developed on the basis of the analysis of Polish and English-language bibliography; the empirical part was based on surveys conducted on a sample of 76 entities representing the SME sector. Analysis of the answers allowed to conclude that the effect of cooperation, in the first place, are organizational changes and then marketing and process ones. On the other hand product innovations are relatively rare. Research confirmed that cooperation is a very important source of innovation but it should be noted that the scope of implemented solutions depends on the form of relations between partners; it is emphasized that the closer the relations between contractors, the greater the innovative propensity and the greater opportunities to use mutual resources.
