Summary/Abstract: Changes in the health field in the second half of the twentieth century allowed the widespread popularization of “sport for all” and health-oriented physical activity. Physical activity is considered to be one of the most important elements of a healthy lifestyle and determinant of physical and mental health of the individual. According to the World Health Organization, lack of has been identified as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality. Dissemination of physical activity in modern societies is one of the main objectives of the programs implemented by international and national authorities, as in Poland. Poles recognize and appreciate the importance of regular sport activities for health, but their statements are not reflected in real actions. The results of research conducted in Poland in the last few years indicate a low level of physical activity in our society. This paper presents the main findings of the Public Opinion Research Center’, Central Statistical Office of Poland’ and Eurobarometer’ research reports about the participation of Poles in physical culture. The article also contains reflections on the reasons for physical inactivity in Poland and events organized in order to encourage our society to regular exercise.
