Summary/Abstract: The Western knights' presence under the walls of Constantinople created a huge problem. Among those who were involved in the struggle against the Latins were Alexios Vth Murtzuphlos. This, even before he became emperor, led several actions of struggle against Western knights, thus gaining the sympathy of the common people. Through the Varangian Guard he will dethrone Alexios IV and throw him in jail where he will be killed by his command. As emperor, he took several actions against the Latins. The commoner refused the emperor's repeated calls to battle, and in this situation he left Constantinople. He allied himself with Alexios III, the former emperor of Byzantium, but ultimately he was blinded by his command. He was eventually caught by Western Crusaders and executed
