Summary/Abstract: Trees are universally considered a common good as they provide a host of environmental, social and economic benefits. The ability to quantify the provision of ecosystem services is essential to understanding the true value of trees in urban areas, which may, in fact, outweigh the market value of wood as a raw material. Apart from numerous advantages of trees functioning in cities, which generate savings to the budgets of cities and individuals, the article quotes the costs incurred by public authorities for managing the urban space. The tool for the valuation of trees as well as the visualization of relevant data is volunteered geographic information. Such information forms the basis for several Internet portals that seek to quantitatively demonstrate the benefits of functional trees in urban environments.
