Summary/Abstract: The word “portrait” is derived from Latin word “Protraho” in terms of word structure. This term means “copying”. First portrait works are seen to have been born out of people's concern about being known at their time and fear of being forgotten after their death. The need for not to be forgotten and being remembered for years of the person whose portrait was made is based on religious references. In some historical eras, people were placed in their graves with the representative picture and monuments that are believed to be with that person even in afterlife. In this respect, the pictures of the graves in Egyptian pyramids and sculptors in Qin Shihuang graveyard - China can be shown as examples (500 soldier sculptors-Terracotta Army, 18 wooden battle carts and more than horse sculptors have been unearthed so far). This article focuses on the factors that affect the perception on the portrait photograph viewer in general, and on light and setting in particular. It is also aimed to identify some research and analyses on how outside factors affect the visual identity of the person whose portrait has been made.
