Summary/Abstract: The church from Lujeni was built at the middle of the 15th century by the boyar Teodor Vitolt, one of the councillors of Iliaş I, ruler of Moldavia ((1432-1433, 1435-1442). So far, the papers devoted to presenting this edifice mainly insisted on its architecture and left aside the question of its functionality. This paper proposes a solution to this problem, and the author correlates the constructive features of the church with the functional specificity of the majority of the similar churches from the Romanian Countries, as well as with the information provided by documentary sources about the founder’s life, career and feudal domain. The conclusion is that the church was the chapel of the residence which boyar Teodor Vitolt erected, in the village of Lujeni, towards the final part of his political career and life.
