Erzurumlu Ozan Çelebi and His Poems in the Turkish Ashik Tradition in Western Europe

Summary/Abstract: The Turkish citizens as workers temporarily went to the Western European countries including Germany, France, Holland, Belgium and Austria in 1961. As time passed, they started to stay there permanently and constructed the Turkish immigrant society in the countries. During this immigration process, the Turkish ashiks who went to those countries to work or give concerts played a considerable role in the transmission of the Turkish ashik tradition to Europe. One of these ashiks is Erzurumlu Ozan Çelebi who was born in Tutmaç village in Oltu district in Erzurum in 1952 and has lived in Holland since 1975. He has an important place in the Turkish ashik tradition in Western Europe and has dwelled on the subjects in his poems such as love, separation, immigration, absence from home, love for his country, death, nature, Islamic Sufism, national values and Turkish immigrants’ problems by articulating the Turkish immigrants’ feelings. He has raised a number of students by giving saz courses which is a sort of stringed instrument at his cultural house. He has fulfilled an important function in the transmission of the Turkish ashik tradition to the next generations.
