One hundred years after Ferdinand de Saussure’s Course

Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the role of the famous Course of General Linguistics and its author Ferdinand de Saussure as the pioneer of structuralism. The emergence and development of the terms structure and structuralism are explained in detail. They are compared to the terminological pairs: system and systematics, whole and holism, function and functionalism, with which the former are associated in a unified paradigm. The leading role of structuralism in the development of science over the last century has been summarized and emphasized.
