Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the ways of improving Catholic religious education in Lithuanian state schools. We are suggesting a revision of the content of Religious Education, in order to bring it closer to various learners whose faith levels may range from religious indifference to high spirituality. The content of Religious Education should also be clear and attractive to the other members of the school community and relate to the whole educational context. The article quotes and analyses the syllabi of Religious Education for German and Austrian state schools and presents their comparative analysis with their Lithuanian analogue. The conclusions of the analysis speak in favour of the German and the Austrian variant, mostly due to their anthropological dimension which gradually leads to religious matters. This approach appears to be interesting for the learners and becomes a means of evangelization. The catechetical aspects (which are very prominent in the Lithuanian variant) in Germany and Austria are dealt with in parish catechesis. The article indicates a large number of topics and problems taken from the German and Austrian syllabi, so that the Lithuanian teachers and authors can have concrete examples to learn from. The article concludes with suggesting several directions for improving the content of teaching Religion at Lithuanian schools. We presume that learning from our colleagues is relevant for us as new members of the European Union.
