Summary/Abstract: This paper presents some untypical interpreters’ roles which emerge inthe course of their work often enough to be considered as typical. The topic will be discussed from the viewpoint of a theorist with many yearsof practical experience, through the example of interpreting informal business meetings, which provide particularly rich empirical material. The interpreter is presented as an assistant, informant, adviser, situation manager, censor, conciliator, actor, therapist, but sometimes also whipping boy and petitioner. The reasons why the interpreter accepts these tasks are explained and some resulting dangers are pointed to.
