Summary/Abstract: The article concerns the involvement of the Association for the Development of the Western Territories in solving the problems of the native population in the western and northern territories of Poland after 1956. The activists of the association attempted to use the political thaw felt after Władysław Gomułka’s return to power in 1956 in order to reactivate the state’s active policy regarding the territories acquired after 1945. They dedicated much of their attention to improving the situation of the native populace and stopping its exodus to Germany. The association contributed to improving the material situation of this group, organising its financial position, restoring the memory of pro-Polish activities of its representatives before the Second World War. The effects of the association’s actions were apparent during the short period directly after its founding. By the end of 1950s, the political authorities have gradually stopped tolerating the existence of individual social activity, turning almost all organisations – including the Association for the Development of the Western Territories – into executors of their own plans.
