Summary/Abstract: Transsexualism – an extreme form of gender disapproval – is defined as an extreme gender identity disorder consisting in a discrepancy between a psychological sense of belonging to a particular gender and carnality of an individual. The question of the relationship between the psyche and soma of a man in reference to the discussed issue seems to be particularly difficult and mysterious: it concerns women and men trapped in their own bodies, slaves of their corporality and sexuality. As there is no method which would allow to match sexual identification to the body, therapeutic procedures are focused on a reverse practice: they adapt the corporality to the declared gender identity. Presented in this article are socio-psychological aspects of functioning of transsexual individuals. The author concentrates in particular on the aspects of psychological development of transsexual individuals, their social, emotional and religious functioning, quality of their lives and suicides.
