Summary/Abstract: The present study draws upon well-known French theories of intertextuality, hypertextuality and transtextuality. It shows that the novel Allah Is Not Obliged (2000) by Ahmadou Kourouma, one of the best-known Francophone (also referred to as world literature in French) authors from the Ivory Coast, is a rewriting or an updated “Africanized“ transposition of the iconic 20th century French novel written by L.-F. Céline, Journey to the End of the Night (1932). Despite 70 years that separate the publishing of the novels, striking similarities exist between them. Brief introduction of the different contexts in which the novels originated is followed by the presentation of Kourouma’s ambivalent relation to the French language. The affinities between the novels are examined on multiple levels. Personal narrators share the attitude towards their being in the world and they share the need to express themselves in an original way.
