Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the different types of abbreviation and its role in a language. The abbreviations are the most intensively developing units of English. Consequently, there is the distinctive interest to abbreviations in modern linguistics. The author considers the abundance of abbreviations to be the characteristic feature of massmedia texts of any modern language. It is concluded that the process of global integration plays the leading role in the activization and development of abbreviations in modern English.
