SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ACTIVITY AND PUBLISHING ACTIVITY OF AN ARCHIVE: THE IMPERATIVE OF PROMOTING ARCHIVAL SCIENCE AND INTERNATIONAL ARCHIVAL COOPERATION ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE NATIONAL ARCHIVE IN DUBROVNIK

Summary/Abstract: In this paper, I am going to make a short overview of the publishing activity of the National Archive in Dubrovnik, when I was the director ofthe Archive in the period between 2000 and 2008. On the basis of exact examples,I am going to point out the significance of the publishing activity in accomplishingcooperation between archives and their cooperation with other scientific andcultural institutions, but also in affirmation of the Archive as a public cultural institution and bringing archival science closer to the general public. Equally, doing a scientific research on archival documents in the Archive, might result inpublishing work which could directly promote and affirm a certain autochthonousproduct of the local community. I made a priority to publish work based on archivalprocessing and arrangement of certain archival fonds or series of documents. Theintroductory studies needed to scientifically valorize the stated archival documentsand put it in a wider historical context. The other parts of books needed to be apublished archival document or an inventory. Contemplating it like this, I set astrategy of the publishing activity of the Archive. The selection of associates wascrucial, both archival employees and external associates.
