Summary/Abstract: Communication in medicine and healthcare has become a central topic of discussion, and the impact of doctors‘ communication competences on patients‘ clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction has been widely acknowledged. EU educational policies on the verbal communication of future doctors are discussed as a system of educational objectives and tools, which have an influence on language and communication skills training. Enhancing the verbal communication skills of students in medicine has a significant impact on their future professional competencies and careers. On global and European level a number of consensus statements, frameworks and models of the content of communication training for doctors have been developed. The analysis of these consensus statements reveals their major characteristics and to what extent developing verbal skills is considered essential for students’ communication skills. The conclusion of the importance of a consensus on enhancing the verbal skills of doctors, as well as on the content of their verbal communication skills training is made.
