Summary/Abstract: The town scribe/notary (notarius civitatis) played the leading role in the structure of the chancellery of the mediaeval and modern city, exercising general control and being responsible for its operation, with criminal liability included. The article focuses on the office of the scribe in the lesser cities of the Royal Prussia in modern age, using the case study of one of them: Nowe nad Wisłą. It discusses the basic principles concerning the conditions of employing an notary, required competencies, remuneration and its relationship to that of other municipal professions, and types of additional benefits that were used as a rule to complement the regular salary. This provides a picture of the general position of the writer in the structure of the chancellery and organs of local authorities of a minor city in Pomerania.
