Summary/Abstract: Services of general economic interest in European law have a special legal status because of the public interest involved in their performance. Since the initial instrument of restriction of market freedom of services on a single European market for consumer protection, the concept of services of general economic interest has evolved to the legal principle of respecting access to services of general economic interest, which presupposes a universal service and a protected customer of the household category. After accession to the European Union, the concept of services of general economic interest in Croatian legislation gradually replaces the notion of public services.
