Summary/Abstract: The article deals with corpora of learner language which are a recent, but very important development. The article reports on the process of the compilation of the Lithuanian component of the International Corpus of Learner English (LICLE) at the Department of English Philology, Vilnius University, and Kaunas Vytautas Magnus University and more specifically describes the subcorpus of VU. The LICLE is compiled as part of the International Corpus of Learner English, which currently contains over two million words of writing of advanced learners of English from 19 different mother tongue backgrounds, theLithuanian component being one of the latest additions. The corpus consists of argumentative essays written by 3rd and 4th year students of English Philology. The length of the essays is 500-1000 words. The LICLE, when completed, will be error-tagged, which will allow for invaluable research into typical error patterns of Lithuanian learners of English. Findings from research into the LICLE can be applied in materials design and development, used in classroom practice, vocabulary, grammar and discourse analysis of learner language.
