How Does One Destroy World‑Class Theater Before the End of One Season? The Fiasco of the New Volksbühne Idea

Summary/Abstract: Berlin Volksbühne is in a serious crisis, not only in the artistic sphere,but also in the structure of the organization. In July 2017, Frank Castorfended his directorship of the theater, and politicians tasked withcultural matters in the Berlin Senate proposed new structural andorganizational solutions that were not entirely pertinent. Politics quiteradically interfered with the delicate sphere of theatrical life, as wellas certain artistic choices that resisted it. In my article, I describe thepolitical and organizational situation that led to a serious crisis atthe Volksbühne, including a serious decline in attendance, and moreimportantly, the fall of a myth.
