Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to examine the functions of characters’ proper names in Men at Arms by Terry Pratchett – a second novel in the City Watch Cycle. The study is based on the theory of “Two Acts” which divides the analysed functions into the permanent and the momentary. The first are identified, defined and discussed on the basis of the naming act in Men at Arms and the latter undergo an analogous process on the basis of the act of using a name in the novel.
