The History of the Romanian Liturgy: the Order of Prothesis in the Liturgikons of the 16th-18th centuries.

Summary/Abstract: Being situated between two great liturgical traditions, the Greek and the Slavonic one, the Romanian Church has always sought her place in history of Eastern liturgical tradition. Breathing the troublous air of Balkan politics of the Powers that not always were friendly, other times keeping the wavering flame into the wind of the Reformation or of the expanding Rome, and not rarely restrained by mostly foreign hierarchs, Romanians’Liturgy quickly found a sufficiently clear and precise rhythm and pacing in order to express the truths of faith reserved only to the most sacred language. The Teodosie moment (1680) was only an intermezzo which could not restrain the enthusiasm of translating and perfecting the Romanian liturgical language, started by deacon Coresi and accomplished or polished by metropolitans Simion Ştefan, Dosoftei and Antim the Ivirian. The liturgical practices used by Romanians beginning with the 16th century evolved and adapted continuously to the local and contemporary realities. Even if they were not homogenous as language or liturgical structure, the Romanian Liturgikon followed its own course. In the present study we aimed at identifying the evolution of the Prothesis in the Romanian Liturgikons in thh 16th-18th centuries, highlighting the additions or the fluctuations of the rubrics or of the contents of prayers.
