Summary/Abstract: The hypothesis about the occurrence of secular stagnation in developed economies and the model explanation of its causes is one of the most interesting theoretical concepts that have emerged in recent years in response to the global economic crisis. It attempts to interpret the parallel occurrence of two long-term trends: a decline in real interest rates and a slowdown in GDP growth. The article presents two main approaches to the theoretical justification of this trend – from the demand and supply sides. This distinction is important, because each of them may result in other recommendations as to the shape of economic policy addressing this phenomenon. An attempt was also made to look at the state of the Polish economy through the lens of the secular stagnation hypothesis.
