Summary/Abstract: A fragment from the Nobel Laureate’s book, Identity Violence. The Illusion of Destiny, in which the author criticizes the dominant multiculturalism in Great Britain. He considers that it is more a “plural monoculturalism”, because it traps individuals in identities that they haven’t chosen for themselves. His attack aims mainly at the authorities’ tendency to classify people according to their religious convictions, while completely ignoring the individual’s right to options regarding affiliations. A seeming tolerance represents actually a denial of individual freedom.
