Summary/Abstract: The narrative sources kept from Ion Câmpineanu and the members of his political group are usually scarce, these documents representing real “rarities” for the researcher interested in the history of the National Party from Wallachia at the end of the 1830s. The thirty letters published here (identified at the Library of the Romanian Academy) span for a period of approximately two decades, between 1838 and 1860, and cover political issues, comments on important events from the history of Wallachia at the middle of the 19th century, or aspects regarding the everyday life of Ion Câmpineanu. Thus, they can be grouped into three categories: those referring to his political demarches in London from 1839, those ulterior to 1842, in which he informs his nephew, Ion Ghica, about the main political events of the day from Bucharest, and those in which he approaches personal matters. They offer a direct glimpse into his political activity for national emancipation, giving unmediated access to his aspirations and means used, revealing information from the small circle of those involved in the demarche. Also, they offer details about his political and personal relation with Ion Ghica and give a better understanding of Câmpineanu’s position on the political scene from Bucharest, after his release from the exile imposed in 1840.
