Summary/Abstract: Majkowski draws on Bakhtin’s notion of the carnivalesque to examine a selection of video games, exploring the interaction between carnivalesque elements and the conceptual framework on the plot level. Focusing on questions of representation, justification, and the player’s experience of violence and destruction, he describes the grotesque potential of nominally realistic sandbox games as well as the role of such motives for the carnivalization of video games.
