Summary/Abstract: Sobolczyk reads Janusz Korczak’s children’s novel Kaytek the Wizard through its gothic motifs with particular attention to sexual non-normativity. This non-normativity is realized through masked homoerotic tropes, including quotations from the classics of Modernist homosexual literature (Wilde, Proust), and through the writer’s participation in discussions of the “age of consent,” which amounts to a statement on child sexuality. What is more, Korczak uses gothic tropes, above all the motif of the double and of esotericism.
