Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the image of Oriental women emerging from some travel writings from the second half of the 19th century. Influenced by the model of a sensual Oriental woman from One Thousand and One Nights and portraits of voluptuous odalisques; while in the Middle East, the travellers confront their dreamt image with the reality. Do they confirm it or challenge it? The texts of Nerval, Flaubert, Fromentin, Colet and Gasparin, who travelled to Egypt between 1843 and 1869, are analysed to answer this question and to see how the authors represent Oriental women.
