Summary/Abstract: In the Law "On Education in the Russian Federation," adopted in 2012,family status was proclaimed as an alternative. Actualization of this status in practice required philosophical, economic, sociological and psychological analysis. A sufficient number of theoretical papers have emerged, on the basis of which it is possible to form a generalized idea of whatfamily education is, what its position is, and whether it can be considered as an alternative to general school education. Of interest to the authors, these issues were analyzed in the context of comparative approach and resultedin two determinative conclusions of the prospectof family education. The first is that today family education cannot be fully considered as an alternative to the general one, since it has a weak methodological base, and its state is determined by the subjective approach to organization. The second is that for development of family education it is necessary to solve two big problems: a) to build a system of pedagogical parenteducation; b) to create an appropriate ecosphere in order to support family education/training.
