Summary/Abstract: The conception of own competences is formed in the interaction with a family, first of all, parents. There are different competences. According to Suzic (2005), they represent a continuum, while their division serves only to observe certain aspects of different competences. The aim of this research was to examine if there is a connection between the assessment of relationship with parents from the students` point of view and their self-appraisal of the competences. The following competences were examined: cognitive, emotional, work-active and social. Students of pedagogy and psychology were chosen since they are to be the most competent in their future occupation to work with children and adolescents and their stimulating of development of above mentioned competences. The questionnaires were given to a sample of 140 students of pedagogy and psychology of Faculty of Philosophy in Nis, as follows - PRSQ, authored by Karl Titze, which examines different aspects of relationship with parents (identification, autonomy, conflicts with parents, overprotective parents, physical abuse and emotional burden with the relationship with parents) and BEL index by Nenad Suzic, which examines self-evaluation of cognitive, emotional, social and work-active competences. The results have shown that these self-evaluations (appraisals) of competences are in low up to middle and statistically significant correlation with a number of aspects of assessment of parents. Higher levels of competences are generally in a positive correlation with the positive aspects of notion on parents (autonomy, cohesion, identification) and in a negative correlation with punishing, hostility and conflicts with parents. Persons with better evaluation of personal competences tend to have more positive assessments of relationship with parents, especially with the mother.
