Summary/Abstract: The monograph of Ludmiła Siryk entitled A desire for Europe. The literary output of Kiev neo-classicists is the first complex treatment of the heritage of Kiev neo-classicists in the European context. The Introduction discusses the subject, goals, structure and assumptions of the work. Chapter I (Neo-classicism in Ukrainian literature: theoretical basis and historical outline) presents the cultural and ideological phenomenon in the situation of statelessness of Ukraine. It is emphasized the noe-classicism refers to the sphere of values, beginning with the universal ethical principles through the didactic and salvific function of art. Chapter II entitled The concept of Ukrainian literature in research papers is an attempt to present the program of the development of national literature. The specific character of neo-classicists’ Europeism is indicated. The research emphasis is land on the notions of “Europe” and “Europeism” and Europeanization through adapting the classic patterns. The subject of chapter III (The axiological dimensions of poetry) is analysis of the system of values preferred by neo-classicists. Chapter IV entitled European literature in translations and views on translation is devoted to an analysis of the translation heritage of neo-classicists. It is emphasized that translators treat translation as an category artistic, ideological and pertaining to value judgment. The innovative character of neo-classicist is indicated, which is reflected in the “school of translation”. The Conclusions summarize the crucial theses of the monograph and articulates the importance of the literary output of neo-classicists. The topicality of the problems undertaken is emphasized. The effect of the research shows the involvement of Ukrainian neo-classicists in the culture-forming, anthropological, historiosophical, ontological and socio-political problems
