Summary/Abstract: The present paper investigates data related to manner adverbs from a historical perspective. The focus is on the position of manner adverbs in Old English. These adverbs are usually taken to adjoin the verb phrase (VP), but there is some confusing evidence from Old and Middle English which may indicate that they could actually occur in some higher projection. Following Kemenade (2000), there is evidence for at least two adverb positions in Old English, one adjoined to the VP and the other to the tense phrase (TP). This study seeks to analyze the evidence for OE and interpret the data in the light of recent syntactic theory on clausal structure and adverbs.
