Summary/Abstract: This essay is about the emblematic tool of the Reformation, i.e. the hammer, which Martin Luther supposedly used in late autumn 1517 for nailing his 95 anti-indulgence theses onto the door of the Castle church in Wittenberg. Or rather about the absence of such a tool whose use is unconfirmed by every researcher dealing with the history of the Reformation. This absence gives rise to the actual question posed by such reflections: what is the significance of the new hermeneutics of the Bible, devised by Luther, for the present-day expert on literature?
