Summary/Abstract: The article presents a story of Jerzy Kotula (1855 – 1889), a book seller from Cieszyn, who greatly contributed to preserving Polish national identity of the Cieszyn area, being one of the local activists of the Evangelical Church. He was a book seller, editor, bibliographer while conducting educational activities. He provided funding for publications of books. Most notably, in 1879 he published a brochure in Cieszyn which presented a letter, dated 8 August, written to him by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski and concerning the mission of Polish schools operating in Silesia. The brochure was entitled W sprawie szkół ludowych na Śląsku (kilka uwag dla nauczycieli) [In the Matter Folk Schools in Silesia (a few comments for teachers)]. From 1883 until his passing Jerzy Kotula owned and operated a Polish bookshop in Cieszyn.
