The intelligentsia of Zemstvo of the Upper Volga region and its role in the public libraries opening in the late XIX — the early XX centuries

Summary/Abstract: The article considers the cultural and educational activities of the li-brary intelligentsia of Zemstvo in the Upper Volga region on the example of its three outstanding representatives — F. K. Opochinin, M. M. Kalinin, and V. A. Pazukhin. The role of intelligentsia in the public libraries opening in the towns of the Upper Volga region is studied on the base of the printed athenaeum reports and the archive documents. The key statistic indices of the libraries work, and their influence on the local population are analyzed.
