Summary/Abstract: The Old Bulgarian translation of St. Cyril of Jerusalem’s Catechism has not been used so far as a source of research on the scientific knowledge in Old Bulgarian (and Old Slavic) literature. Dogmas of Creed are not exposed imperatively but are clarified mainly in polemics with the opponents of the Christian religion. Therefore, the function of the scientific vocabulary in Catechism words is determined directly by the church official pragmatics of the text. That is in the cultivation of religious rigidity in neophytes scientific background knowledge is exploited in models, which on the one hand generate a positive attitude towards the saving act of repentance and baptism, and on the other hand, synthesize religious competence through the required arguments in defense of the Christian faith against pagan verbosity (елиньскаѧ блѧдь, елиньскоѥ баснословесиѥ) and heretical guile (ересьноѥ ядовитьство, еретичьская льсть, грѧзь еретичьская). For example, in Pro-catechism and in II catechism word the explication of examples from everyday practice decodes the need for moral renewal through the use of background medical vocabulary (строупъ, ѧзва, тѣлесьная ѧзва, дъгна, образъ дъгньнъ, пластырь, очима болѣти, врачевати сѧ, ицѣлѣти, врачь). Thus, is prepared the awakening and understanding of the biblical quotations, revealing the saving sacrifice of the Son of God and The faith Healer’s receiving God's Grace. As a whole, due to adopted teleological approach to the clarification of the doctrine of God as Creator of Being, the scientific vocabulary in the texts that show the neophyte the order and the useful arrangement of the universe, arising from the rational and purposeful God's Providence. The scientific vocabulary excerpted from Sin. 478 is grouped thematically according to the various scientific fields. The linguistic analysis consistently follows the uses of high frequency and low frequency tokens of the classic Old Bulgarian manuscripts and tokens that are hapax legomenon in the classic Old Bulgarian texts. In terms of the stratigraphy of scientific vocabulary in Sin. 478, which is not fixed in the classic Old Bulgarian manuscripts, a conclusion is drawn that the Old Bulgarian translation of the Catechism of St. Cyril of Jerusalem reflects the lexical norm characteristic of the Preslav monuments, eg.: бычьи, виждьнъ, врачевание, дѣтиродиѥ, звѣздьнъ, коситьръ, късаньтикъ, купарисъ, лисица, медвѣдь, мозгъ, мравиѥ, мѧкота, олупиада / оулупиада, растрѣсновениѥ, роучица, соупъ, съхли, тьрноплодьнъ, трѣсканиѥ, трѣсновениѥ, тоучеродьнъ, ястрѧбъ, цвѣтьчьникъ, чоувитва.
