OUT OF OBSERVATIONS ON VOCABULARY OF THE OLD BULGARIAN TRANSLATION OF THE GEORGE HAMARTOLOS’ CHRONICON: IMAGINERY RUSSICISMS (2)

Summary/Abstract: The paper examines some words of the list with “russicisms” which is a false premise for some Russian scholars’ thesis about translation activities in Kievan Russia. Those scholars sometimes incorrectly historicise the lexical data simply extrapolating today’s situation on the past, and sometimes they simply ignore the fact that Old Russian manuscripts do not directly reflect Old Russian language. A modern tendency gathers strength in some studies: scholars like D. M. Bulanin, A. A. Turilov and A. A. Pichkhadze are trying to revive the old idea of N. N. Durnovo that Bulgarian and Russian translators were working together in Kievan Russia. Thus, they simply take away texts from the Old Bulgarian literary tradition. The analysis reveals that words like вѣдунии, гричь, гроблая, жюковина, клаколъ, наложьница in the Old Bulgarian translation of the George Hamartolos’ Chronicon are alleged russicisms. There are some doubts about жюковина, but if they are justified, the word will not be primary but secondary in preserved copies of the Chronicon, so it can not be relevant for the origin of the translation.
