Summary/Abstract: This study of the relations between deixis and compositional rules is based on an analysis of one homily written by Jakub Vojtech Gazda and published in a book called Fructus maturi in 1796. Deictic reference to the participant role of a communication (person deixis) is expressed by personal pronouns, possessive pronouns and agreement suffixes of verbs, especially in the beginning of Gazda’s homily. First person deixis refers to the speaker (I = author) in the exordium, or it refers to both, the speaker and referents grouped with the speaker (we = inclusive first person deixis) in the centre part of homily. Deictic reference to a person or persons identified as addressee is less common in Gazda’s homily, it is usually situated in the part of a pray, where the addressee is Christ (you = second person deixis).
