Summary/Abstract: Czeslaw Gumkowski was without a doubt one of the most interesting figures in the world of journalism and literature in Lodz from the period of the World War I and the interwar period. His works are an interesting document of the era in which he lived. Gumkowski is only known as an author of the ballad titled „The Black Manka”. Besides the mentioned ballad though, Gumkowski was publishing mainly in local newspapers. In his texts he often discussed current events, including political ones. This makes his works an interesting source of information about the history of Lodz in 1914–1918. The writer also engaged in numerous cultural and social projects.
