Summary/Abstract: This article describes the role of church singing which is an essential and integral part of the Orthodox liturgy. The text deals with some chants which are not so popular, more specifically the Katabasia, traditionally sung at Christmas. In addition, information is presented about the origin and content of the chants as well as their order in the canon and their exceptional impact on the human spirit, capable of infusing the worshippers with the mood for mystical meditation and prayer.
