Summary/Abstract: The theme of memory occupies a central place in the work of the Italian writer Italo Calvino. The present article consists of two parts. In the first one, we have conducted a detailed analysis of two of his stories – little frequented by the public – whose undisputed protagonist is memory itself: Racconto di battaglia / Tale of a Battle and La memoria del mondo / The Memory of the World. The two writings contemplate a great variety of forms and dynamics of memory. Some of them will be synthetically reiterated in the second part of the research, in which we have attempted to review the most salient facets of Calvino’s incursions into memory, the result of his considerations and continuous reinterpretations of the subject. Given Italo Calvino’s propensity to educate the reader, he is never content just to share his discoveries in a detached manner, but he is committed to giving advice, to drawing alarm signals, to giving lessons and to offering literary recipes for the expansion and the healthy functioning of memory.
