Summary/Abstract: At a time of increasing concern about the accelerated decline in the number of readers, it is appropriate to look for good practice models, convincing and well-grounded solutions and arguments to share and discuss with our students or with whom it may concern. Thus, the present paper aims to retrieve the most important references to the usefulness of reading the classics and the pleasure of reading in general, both seen from the inside, from the reader’s perspective. These are reflections from the critical essays of Italian writer Italo Calvino, well-known for his confidence in the role of literature and the importance of reading in the process of (self-)education.
