Summary/Abstract: The present paper is devoted to the meaning of comparative aspects in literary criticism works by the Ukrainian poet Lesya Ukrainka (1871-1913). It stresses the significant role that the author herself, along with her erudition and character traits, plays in her comparative studies. In the discussion, it is observed that the research methods used by Lesya Ukrainka resemble contemporary comparative studies. It is also shown how the author draws analogies and brings out contrasts. The paper contains an analysis of comparative optics, which allows presenting the profound contexts of the cultures and literatures of both Western Europe, as well as those typical of the Central and Eastern parts of the continent, which are characteristics for Lesya Ukrainka’s literary criticism.
