Summary/Abstract: The essence of foreign direct investments is not only the transfer of capital but also technology as well as organisational and marketing know-how. In the 1990s, they had played a significant role in modernisation of retail trade in Poland. The aim of the article is to identify the scale and structure of investment outlays carried out by commercial entities with foreign capital and their share in total investments in the sphere of trade in Poland. The subject matter of an analysis is the volume, dynamics, and generic and material structure of direct investments of entities with foreign capital. The analysis covered the years 2008–2015. In order to achieve the assumed aim of the article, the author used the method of descriptive statistics and comparative analysis. The basic source material was the CSO’s data, including those specially ordered by the Instytut Badań Rynku, Konsumpcji i Koniunktur (IBRKK). In 2009–2015, the volume of investments of commercial entities with foreign capital was changing depending on the economic situation. The structure of investment outlays also has changed. Currently, the prevailing share is attributed not to buildings and constructions, but to machinery and equipment.
