Summary/Abstract: RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the article is to present psychological research on narrative from the point of view of the development of cognitive representation of narrative and narrative competence in the course of life. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The article presents the results of analyzes of the literature and shows empirical research concerning the knowledge of narrative, developmental changes in this area and the development of narrative competence. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The argumentation consists of four parts. The first one presents the analysis of research on narrative defined as the effect of verbal expression, concerning knowledge about the formal features of narrative and about its content. The second part contains considerations on the development of event schemas which are constituting the essence of the narrative, paying attention to the early formation of the narrative scheme and its automatic updating. The third part shows the development of narrative competence and its relationship with narrative knowledge. The last part shows the use of narrative in psychological research on the life span in the form of a narrative interview. RESEARCH RESULTS: The presented considerations include the proposal of a comprehensive approach to the essence of narrative from the point of view of research on the psychological development of a human being. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Narratives are important psychological ways of gaining knowledge about a human being, his/her identity, and how to modify this knowledge. The knowledge about the use of narratives in the work of a psychologist should find a place in educational programs.
