Summary/Abstract: The article presents methodical improvement of the method of the strategic groups maps by taking into consideration the third dimension (time) to analyze and evaluate the competitive situation in the sector. The aim of this article is to test and apply the 3D strategic groups maps method in intra-sector analysis and evaluation of chosen public higher education institutions (HEIs) competitiveness in Poland in the area of innovativeness and entrepreneurship, and also to develop a procedure for its elaboration. The research problem is to determine, first of all, to which extent the 3D strategic groups maps method can be applied in analysis and evaluation of competitive situation of public higher education institutions (HEIs) in Poland, and secondly, to elaborate the procedure useful for preparing 3D strategic groups maps? The results of the research and the application of 3D variant present conclusions about competitive situation of selected higher education institutions (HEIs) in Poland in the area of innovativeness and entrepreneurship in 2015 and 2016, developed procedure of proceedings; recommendations on the application of methodical improvement of the method of the strategic groups maps.
