Summary/Abstract: The article presents a study on the role of ethical values among 348 effective organizational leaders in Poland. It compares the levels of ethical values and Machiavellianism and the use of ethical and non-ethical influence tactics. The results show that the relation between the level of ethical values and the level of Machiavellianism is very weak and in fact leaders who have high levels of ethical values can also be Machiavellians. Moreover, the Machiavellian leaders are prone to suppress the truth but they do not lie for the sake of the organization, whereas the leaders with high levels of ethical values are more prone to lie for the good of the organization, but they do not suppress the truth. The Machiavellian leaders use more of both ethical and non-ethical influence tactics. The results of this study show that the relations between ethical values and Machiavellianism and the use of manipulation tactics by the effective leaders are ambiguous and may be moderated by some other personality or situational factors.
