ADVANTAGES AND BARRIERS FOR BENCHMARKING ILLUSTRATED WITH AN EXAMPLE OF HOSPITALS IN THE POMERANIAN VOIVODESHIP

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to point out the benefits and barriers for benchmarking usage in financial management of hospitals. The researched population were the Pomeranian hospitals. The main benefits and advantages of benchmarking were identified as a result of the questionnaire survey. Improvement of the hospital’s financial management, increase of knowledge concerning hospital outcomes and processes, as well as more efficient material and costs management have been emphasized by the managers. Apart from the numerous benefits of benchmarking, some barriers and disadvantages have also been identified. These ones included: the insufficient knowledge about benchmarking and its implementation, incomplete data for comparisons and lack of the benchmarking team appointments in the hospitals.
