Summary/Abstract: The right of self-defense is one of the fundamental rights provided to states in order to assure their sovereignty and even their own existence. Since its first appearance in international relations to this day, the times have changed and new threats, weapons, and enemies have emerged. Examples of such changes are the weapons of mass destruction, the development of cyber technologies and the threat of terrorism. This requires the revision of the Institute of self-defense in order for it to remain an adequate tool for the protection of the territory and population of states. This research strives to explore the leading opinions in relation to the right of self-defense and its evolution in international law.
