Summary/Abstract: Metaphor has played a significant role as a phenomenon that challenged linguistic theories. Causing interpretational difficulties, it helped develop linguistic methodology. The article shows the main trends of the 20th century linguistic theories: more considerable emphasis on semantics, pragmatics, as well as ways of creating and developing concepts (cognitivism), all that being accompanied by special interest in language use at the level of utterances and research on text cohesion and features of discourse.
